Celebrate Earth Day!

In our home, with four small children, we have been preparing for Earth Day for several weeks. I have been impressed with the emphasis their school has placed on this incredibly important cause. Our children have given us lessons on recycling, conserving energy and water, and renewing our earth by planting. Today, students, teachers and parents will gather at the school to celebrate by planting trees and flowers on the grounds. On Sunday, our family will go for the second year to our local botanical gardens for a child-friendly Earth Day celebration.

The celebration will include awesome music, crafts for the children (mine made a pine cone and peanut butter bird feeder and colored a reusable tote bag), and educational exhibits about water use, indigenous wildlife. Local experts will be there to discuss "what is being done to protect, conserve, and treasure our land, water, and air." If you are in central Alabama, read more about this celebration here.

I have also found many online resources which help in locating Earth Day events in your area. Click on the Earth Day badge in the sidebar to your right and check here for additional information, to calculate your ecological footprint and learn how to take action.

On a more personal note, Earth Day is especially meaningful to me, because it was a year ago today that I lost my precious mother. I am sad for me and for my children that she is not physically here with us, but I know that she is free and safe and at peace, which makes my heart feel better. I also know that she is here with us always, watching over us and loving us still. My love of and fascination with nature and photography are due in a large part to her loving guidance and example. How fitting then that this day is a special reminder of her. We will be planting today to honor her memory. Thank you, Mama for teaching me and loving me so much. I miss you.

Friday Favorites - Landscapes!

Welcome to the third week of Friday Favorites! I am following the lead of the extremely talented and creative Julie Magers Soulen, who came up with this awesome idea. Please take some time to visit Julie's blog, JulieMagersSoulen Fine Art Photography. You'll see her Friday Favorites and find links to other awesome photography blogs which are also participating.

The artists I have chosen for this week are all members of the POE (Photographers of Etsy) street team, an incredibly active group of artists who are not only some of the most talented photographers out there, but are also wonderfully supportive and encouraging friends.

Each photograph below is a landscape masterpiece! Landscapes are one of the more challenging subjects to photograph. It is difficult to include enough detail in the image and still give the viewer a wide enough vista to enjoy. Each of the artists below has mastered the art of landscape photography. My ever present wanderlust is fueled by these incredible images. What a wonderful world we live in - so many places I want to see!

See something you like? Each of these prints can be yours! Please click on each artist's name below to visit their etsy shop, and click on the title of the photograph to see its etsy listing.

Certainly travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and
permanent, in the ideas of living. Miriam Beard

Worth the Wait

I had been eyeing the pots of ranunculus at the grocery store for a few weeks, and today, I happened upon this beauty marked down to $1.50. It was worth the wait - what fun! I have been wanting to photograph ranunculus for quite some time, but have never come across one until today. The evening sun, my camera, a little one climbing on my back, and a beautiful subject - what a wonderful way to ease into nighttime.....

Happy Birthday

Yesterday was your birthday - my first without you. I wish you could be here to see them growing, here to help me find my way along this road, here so we could talk and laugh, so I could hear your voice and see you smile. There is so much more I want to ask you.

Having said this, just knowing you are free of pain and sadness, knowing that you are happy, safe and whole, makes my loss a bit more bearable. I know that you are here with us - watching us and loving us, smiling and laughing. There are reminders all around me. The birds and flowers you love so much, that stepping stone, your books, the way she dances - all of these are gifts from you and reassure me of your presence. I love you so much, Mama. Thank you for loving me.
