Celebrate Earth Day!

In our home, with four small children, we have been preparing for Earth Day for several weeks. I have been impressed with the emphasis their school has placed on this incredibly important cause. Our children have given us lessons on recycling, conserving energy and water, and renewing our earth by planting. Today, students, teachers and parents will gather at the school to celebrate by planting trees and flowers on the grounds. On Sunday, our family will go for the second year to our local botanical gardens for a child-friendly Earth Day celebration.

The celebration will include awesome music, crafts for the children (mine made a pine cone and peanut butter bird feeder and colored a reusable tote bag), and educational exhibits about water use, indigenous wildlife. Local experts will be there to discuss "what is being done to protect, conserve, and treasure our land, water, and air." If you are in central Alabama, read more about this celebration here.

I have also found many online resources which help in locating Earth Day events in your area. Click on the Earth Day badge in the sidebar to your right and check here for additional information, to calculate your ecological footprint and learn how to take action.

On a more personal note, Earth Day is especially meaningful to me, because it was a year ago today that I lost my precious mother. I am sad for me and for my children that she is not physically here with us, but I know that she is free and safe and at peace, which makes my heart feel better. I also know that she is here with us always, watching over us and loving us still. My love of and fascination with nature and photography are due in a large part to her loving guidance and example. How fitting then that this day is a special reminder of her. We will be planting today to honor her memory. Thank you, Mama for teaching me and loving me so much. I miss you.
